Regular readers may know that my wife and I are expecting our first child any day now, so June was largely a month of preparation and waiting. Every time I peeked outside after a storm, quickly grabbed my gear and hopped in the car to catch a sunset, I thought about how our lives are going to change drastically in the next month. There will be an adjustment period for sure — priorities will be shuffled and reshuffled, and I probably won’t be able to run out of the house at the drop of a hat to capture that sunset. But, I’ll have a brand new subject to keep me busy taking photos for a while, and I’m pretty sure the beauty I’ll be able to capture at home will rival even the most epic landscape. 🙂
Here are my favorites for the month of June. I usually share these photos on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Google+, along with camera, lens and exposure info. Make sure to give me a follow on any of those networks to see what I’m posting throughout the month. These were all taken with the Olympus OM-D E-M5. Enjoy!
In my favorite photos from last month, I mentioned how I had taken so many shots of the Oregon coast towards the end of May that I may include some in this month’s retrospective. Here are two of my favorites.
June’s weather in the Northeast can always be a little volatile. A beautiful afternoon can turn into a violent thunderstorm and then a gorgeous sunset to follow. We’ve had a number of days like this, which have made for some beautiful sunsets and cloud formations.
On one of of those beautiful nights, I went to one of my favorite spots on the Mohonk Preserve that’s right down the street from me, Pin Oak Allee (incidentally, that’s where those maternity shots where we saw the bears were taken). There was a beautiful sunset that night that allowed me to get a couple great shots of the Shawangunk Ridge.
This next shot was taken with my Rokinon 7.5mm fisheye lens, which I reviewed here just this month. When used the right way, a fisheye can be a wonderful “ultra wide” landscape lens to add to your kit. I processed this shot with my summer glow Lightroom preset, just one of the presets that I’ll be releasing next month in my first Less Gear || More Photos LR Preset Pack.
I also had a chance this month to do some indoor, low light band photography at a local bar with two of my favorite lenses, the Olympus 25mm and Olympus 45mm. For a small venue shoot like this one, I think they’re the only two lenses you need. Here’s one of my favorite shots from the night.
What have you been shooting during the month of June? Let me know in the comments!
